EMDR Therapy in Ballina & Online for Trauma and Relationship Issues

Some experiences don’t just fade with time. A memory that still feels raw. A reaction that seems bigger than the moment calls for. A pattern in your relationships that keeps repeating, no matter how much you understand it on an intellectual level.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a therapy designed for exactly this. It works with how the brain stores and processes difficult experiences, helping you move through them rather than staying stuck in them.

Most experiences are processed and stored without difficulty. But overwhelming or repeated distressing events can overload this natural process, leaving memories unprocessed and stored in a raw, emotional form rather than as a resolved story. These unprocessed memories can be triggered by present-day situations that resemble the original experience, even when the memory itself feels distant or forgotten. EMDR helps your brain form the connections needed to fully process these memories, so they stop intruding on your present.

I offer EMDR therapy in person at my Ballina office and online via Zoom to clients across Australia.

By focusing on your personal growth, you can transform your relationships with others and with yourself. My clients typically see improvements in their relationship patterns and communication skills within the first few sessions.

Counselling is an opportunity to gain insight, develop healthier ways of relating, and discover how to move forward in a way that feels authentic and aligned with your needs. It’s about becoming more attuned to your emotions and finding clarity in the decisions that impact your relationship and life.

If any of this resonates with you, it might be time to explore how individual counselling can help.

I’m training in EMDR through the EMDR Institute’s Accredited Basic Training, delivered in Australia and accredited by the EMDR Association of Australia (EMDRAA) and the EMDR International Association (EMDRIA). I began working with clients using EMDR after completing the first part of this training, and I’m continuing my training and clinical supervision as I build on this work.

One of the reasons I pursued EMDR training is that I saw, again and again in relationship therapy, how much unresolved trauma was shaping the way people connected with their partners. EMDR gives me another way to help clients process what’s happened so it stops running the show, both for their own wellbeing and for the health of their relationships.

What to expect in an EMDR session

EMDR follows a structured process, broadly moving through three stages:

Your first session runs for 60 minutes and focuses on history and preparation. Subsequent sessions run for 50 minutes. Throughout the process you remain fully alert and in control, and can pause or stop at any time. EMDR is not a form of hypnosis.

Healing from trauma doesn’t mean carrying it forever. EMDR offers a way to process what’s happened so it stops shaping your present, available in person in Ballina or online wherever you are in Australia.

Frequently Asked Questions About EMDR Therapy

EMDR is an evidence-based therapy that helps your brain reprocess distressing memories so they lose their emotional intensity. Rather than focusing purely on talking through an experience, it works with the way the brain naturally processes memory.

I’m training in EMDR through the EMDR Institute’s Accredited Basic Training, delivered in Australia and accredited by EMDRAA and EMDRIA. I’m currently working with clients using EMDR while continuing my training and clinical supervision. You can read more about my full training and qualifications on my about page, or we can discuss it on our free inquiry call.

No. Throughout EMDR you remain fully alert, wide awake, and in control the entire time. You can stop the process at any point. I support and facilitate your own capacity to heal, intervening as little as possible.

Yes. EMDR can be delivered effectively via secure video call, and I offer it both online and in person at my Ballina office.

No. EMDR is a structured, gradual process. We build stability and coping resources before any reprocessing begins, and you’re always in control of the pace. Some people notice temporary emotional discomfort during or between sessions, which we’ll discuss and prepare for together.

No. Unlike some talk therapies, EMDR doesn’t require you to describe every detail of a difficult experience for it to be effective.

This depends on what you’re working through. For a single, specific issue, most people need somewhere between 6 and 12 sessions. More complex or longstanding trauma, such as issues stemming from childhood, can take longer. We’ll discuss what’s realistic for your situation as part of our work together.

Sessions are $220. The first session is 60 minutes, and subsequent sessions are 50 minutes. I don’t currently offer Medicare or health fund rebates.

If you’re unsure if EMDR is right for you, book a free 15-minute inquiry call with me so we can talk it through.
