What’s the difference between a counsellor and a psychologist?
Psychologists are university-trained in psychology and can conduct diagnostic testing and assessments. Most specialise in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and work within a clinical framework. They can also provide Medicare-rebated sessions through a Mental Health Care Plan.
Counsellors and psychotherapists specialise in talk and experiential therapies, as well as in the therapeutic relationship. The focus is on helping you understand your patterns, heal from past experiences, and make meaningful changes, particularly in relationships. The approach tends to be more personalised and less clinical than psychology.
For relationship issues specifically, a specialist counsellor or psychotherapist is often the better fit. Most psychologists don’t have dedicated training in couples therapy, whereas I’ve spent over 20 years specialising exclusively in relationship work and hold advanced training in PACT and the Gottman Method.
One practical difference: I’m not able to provide Medicare rebates as I’m not a registered psychologist. If cost is a concern and you’d prefer rebated sessions, ask your GP for a Mental Health Care Plan referral to a psychologist.
What happens in the first therapy appointment?
In your initial assessment session, Clinton will ask you about your current situation, issues, or difficulties that you want to resolve. This first session is also an opportunity to get a feel for Clinton’s approach and ensure you are a good fit for working together.
At the end of the first session, Clinton will share his assessment and feedback and make recommendations for future therapeutic work.
You will decide with Clinton on the best approach to session frequency and goals for your work together.
How many sessions will I need?
The number of therapy sessions is unique for each person. It depends on the relationship conflict, its ongoing duration, what kind of change you want, and your motivation and commitment.
On average, clients tend to work with Clinton for 3-12 months. Some clients working on long-standing issues will work with Clinton for significantly longer because they see the value in long-term therapy.
Occasionally, some clients only require a small number of sessions because they want to resolve a very specific issue that doesn’t require many sessions.
In our experience, the best results from counselling and therapy are achieved when appointments are scheduled and attended regularly.
Please note that Clinton cannot provide Medicare rebates as he is not a psychologist. For rebated psychology sessions, please see your GP for a Mental Health Care Plan to be referred to a psychologist.
